Photos and Video from My Remote Broadcast to the Pacific North West Synth Fest in Seattle

On October 29, 2011 I Skyped into the Pacific Northwest Synth Fest from my studio in Boulder. In this photo you can see I was being projected in the room and there was a laptop under the projection so I could see and hear the audience take questions. I presented on Percussa AudioCubes and performed a few songs. The laptop gives you a sense of scale for the projection size. I've been working on my streaming set up so that I can broadcast high fidelity audio, hear my rig in my headphones, plus hear the other side of the conversation in my headphones as well. It all worked great!

Matrixsynth captured the last 15 minutes of my talk on his iPhone 4s. A majority of the talk is on the technical detail of using Percussa AudioCubes so to spare you from the technical details I went ahead and placed a copy of the video bookmarked to start at a musical performance of the song “I Can See Them” from the album I Hear Your Signals. You can of course start from the beginning of the video to catch the talk.

I actually started the talk with a performance of “First Orbit” from the same album. I don’t have a copy of the footage from the talk at Synth Fest, but I did USTREAM a sound check of the song earlier that weekend.

Before and after the talk, I was interacting with festival goes in the “petting zoo” room where there were all sorts of demos going on. I answered questions on AudioCubes.

In this photo I’m playing a new song called “Control Zone” using a Moog Etherwave Theremin (pitch-to-MIDI) and a single AudioCube to control virtual synthesizers with 6 dimensions of spatial control.

Recording of My Radio.Electro-Music.com Halloween 2011 Online Streaming Concert

Yesterday I performed a live set for for the Halloween 2011 Online Streaming Concert over at Radio.Electro-Music.com. This 29 minute recording (CC-BY-NC) is a high-fidelity stereo capture from the stream in it’s entirety so get those studio headphones out or play on kick ass system!

Note that the intro was re-recorded later that day as I forgot to turn on the stream recorder till I was 45 seconds in – doh. The rest of the audio is from the actual stream with one edit to remove 30 seconds of dead air when I experienced a minor issue.

Studio Changes to Support Live Streaming of Audio and Video

This concert, and my audio/video broadcast from Boulder to the Pacific Northwest Synth Fest (talk and performance on Percussa AudioCubes) is the culmination of about 4 elapsed weeks of work to reorganize my studio space to accommodate this sort of performance. Part of that is investing the time to become very comfortable adding another layer of elements to manage while I perform live – so lots of rehearsal.

Studio Redesign Underway + First Experiments with Live Streaming Performances

I’ve been rearranging things in my studio so I can have both my laptop-based visual controllerism rig (the one I use to perform my albums live) and my hardware synth rig (the one I use for jams and long-form improvization) accessible at the same time. I’m setting it up in such a way so it’s easier to cross pollinate between rigs as well. I’m about half-way through the redesign and thought I’d share a few pics. In the shot above, I’m playing the grid controller the Tenori-On and the white Waldorf Blofled synth just barely in the photo.

One of the other reasons I’m redesigning the studio is to better accommodate live streaming performances via USTREAM and an Electro-Music Radio. Earlier this week I did a brief test on USTREAM. You can see it my USTREAM page, or watch the YouTube version below (watch embedded video).

In the video I'm working on set of performances patches for my UltraNova synthesizer (the blue one on top) that lets me not only use it as a synth but also process all the other instruments in real-time. This is an early experiment where I'm using Theremin and Blofeld synth as audio sources for UltraNova Synth and FX. Tenori-On grid is triggering notes on UltraNova. UltraNova is acting as a mixer and the sound card and is actually streaming audio directly to USTREAM via USB. Wow that was geeky – lol – but you get the idea.
