I’ll be competing on behalf of the Belgium-based Percussa at the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at George Tech on Friday February 17th. I’ll be presenting their AudioCubes by explaining the product and performing some original music.
The Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition is an annual event to find the world’s best new ideas in musicality, design, and engineering. In total, $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the most exciting novel musical instruments and presented by Tech alumnus Richard Guthman in honor of his musician wife, Margaret…Twenty-two inventors, composers and designers from nine countries were selected to compete, from more than 50 entries….
The event is a hotbed for musicians and artists who are pushing the boundaries of music performance. Wired magazine has called it the “X-Prize for music,” and contestants have likened it to a TED Conference for new musical instrument designers.
The event starts on Thursday the 16th. I’ll be performing in the preliminary round on Friday the 17th – at 2:20EST (on the schedule I’m in the slot labelled “Bert Schiettecatte” as I’m representing Bert at the event. At 3). Finalists will be announced at 3:30 and there will be another performance for finalists at from 7:00-8:30 PM with an 8:30 PM Reception and Awards Ceremony.
Yesterday I performed a live set for for the Halloween 2011 Online Streaming Concert over at Radio.Electro-Music.com. This 29 minute recording (CC-BY-NC) is a high-fidelity stereo capture from the stream in it’s entirety so get those studio headphones out or play on kick ass system!
Note that the intro was re-recorded later that day as I forgot to turn on the stream recorder till I was 45 seconds in – doh. The rest of the audio is from the actual stream with one edit to remove 30 seconds of dead air when I experienced a minor issue.

Studio Changes to Support Live Streaming of Audio and Video
This concert, and my audio/video broadcast from Boulder to the Pacific Northwest Synth Fest (talk and performance on Percussa AudioCubes) is the culmination of about 4 elapsed weeks of work to reorganize my studio space to accommodate this sort of performance. Part of that is investing the time to become very comfortable adding another layer of elements to manage while I perform live – so lots of rehearsal.

Guest Appearance with Head Full of Zombies on Saturday Oct. 29th in Colorado Springs
Those of you who know me as an experimental instrumental electronic musician may not know that I played in the alt-rock band the for 13 years. I retired in 2003 after playing hundreds of shows.
The band continued on after I left and now after over 22 years has decided to call it quits. They are doing one final HALLOWEEN BASH Friday and Saturday October 28th & 29th at the Ritz Grill in Colorado Springs. Shows start at 9:30.
I’m dropping by Saturday night to catch up with old friends and fans and will sit in to sing a song.
One of the highlights of 2010 for me was attending and performing at Electro-Music 2010 festival in NY. I’m excited to announce I’m returning again this year. For those not familiar this festival was called "The Woodstock of electronic music" by Philadelphia Inquirer.
The electro-music(TM) festival is the world's premiere event for experimental electronic music. Now in its seventh year, this three day conference/music festival includes concerts, seminars, demonstrations, and jam sessions. The scope is very broad, covering all aspects of electro-music: experimental electronic music, circuit bending, computer music, electro-jazz, modular synthesis, musique concrete, improvisation, algorithmic composition, multi-media, visual art and much more. The focus will be on participant involvement, sharing, community development, audience education, and great music.
I'll be playing a 25 minute performance of original instrumental electronic music using keys, antennas, grids, and AudioCubes. My performance is part of the Ableton Colorado meetup will be all music and not a lecture. I'm first up so this is a good opportunity to pop-in and see my unique performance style even if your not into the super geeky tech side of electronic music. The show is 18+ and FREE.
This is a perview of the set I'll be playing in September at the Electro-Music 2011 festival in NY and will include songs from my previous concept album "I Hear You Signals" along with some new songs destined for my next album. I'll bring along some physical CDs for purchase.

The Digital Media Studies Program at the University of Denver just opened their their fantastic new HyperCube studio performance space. I had the honor and pleasure to appear as guest performer for the open house. In attendance were staff, students and guests.
This was a “lights up” performance and talk and the theme of my performance and presentation was spatial controllerism with Ableton Live, Percussa AudioCubes, and Moog Etherwave Theremin. To illustrate concepts, I played songs from my album “I Hear Your Signals” including “First Orbit” , “Control Zone”. I also played the song “Celebration and Voices” illustrating matrix controllerism with the Novation Launchpad.
It was a fantastic experience as the performance went well, the new space is awesome, and the crowd was enthusiastic and asked a lot of great questions about the art, technology, methodology, and technique.
Afterwards, I invited some students to take the AudioCubes for a spin. As always there was a lot of curiosity about the Theremin as well.
Many thanks to Trace Reddell, Ph.D. Director, Digital Media Studies and Darwin Grosse for the invite and for encouraging interaction and collaboration between academia and the larger community of electronic music artists. What a way to kick off my 2011 with this as my first performance!
